Roost and Grills

I'm baaaaaaack!

It's the season of biking. Which coincidentally coincides with the season of pizza. You see, I don't take well to cold weather, so in the colder months I usually get lazy, work out a lot less, and as a result eat less pizza. But now that the warm temperatures are here, I love to get outside and break a sweat, and then reward myself with pizza. All pizza I eat, aside from birthday pizza, is earned. I think it makes it taste better.

This weekend was a stunner of a weekend so I biked a hundred kilometres to set myself up for a Saturday night feast. We were feeling pizza and almost went with one close by that we had had before but I had never reviewed. Then I remembered Roost and Grills. My husband and his brother had tried their non-pizza fare before and thought it was decent - plus well priced - so we decided to order a pizza. Okay, well, we ordered a pizza, fried cauliflower, fries, and chicken nuggets. We earned it, remember?

Let me tell you something about this pizza. It was freaking beautiful.

This is the butter paneer pizza, hold the 'shrooms. I opened it up and just stared at it for a bit. Look at that even browning. Look at the distribution of toppings. This is like a magazine pizza. Time to find out if it tasted any good.

After a few pics I dug right in. Oh sweet cheesus did it ever hit the spot. The butter paneer pizza has on it butter paneer sauce rather than tomato sauce, onions, green peppers, paneer cheese, and mozzarella. I don't usually get speciality pizzas but I was dying to try this one since I love Indian food and paneer in particular. One thing that was awesome was that when you bit into the pizza, the cheese and toppings didn't all come cascading into your mouth, leaving you with bare crust. It held up really well. The vegetables were very thinly sliced meaning they cooked well, crushing a beef I often have with undercooked green peppers on pizza. The butter paneer sauce was a welcome change from tomato sauce, adding a light flavour to the pie, but we could have used just a touch more. Paneer generally doesn't have much taste but added a bit of squeaky-ness, almost like a cheese curd would.

And let's talk about crust for a second. Ottawa is dominated by thick crust pizza. This crust was the perfect thickness. Thin, but not like paper. It wasn't as filling as other pizzas but didn't leave the bloated feeling you get after eating one single slice of JoJos. Overall this was a really, really good pizza, and I will definitely return for more.

At $20.50 for a medium 6 slice, the price is fine considering the toppings. If I hadn't gotten sides I would have ate my half and potentially still been hungry (there's a black hole where my stomach should be). I will go for the large next time which is $4 extra, and I'm totally okay with that.

I've rated Roost and Grills seven out of eight slices.
