Farinella

This weekend was one of those lazy summer weekends where you don't have anything planned and you entirely play it by ear. It was definitely awesome, and after a long bike ride on Saturday we felt like Dirienzo's for lunch. We ate our sandwiches outside as we baked in the 46 degree heat, and then walked to the other end of Beech to get gelato at the somewhat newly opened Farinella.

Originally the plan was just for dessert. Their gelato, by the way, was delicious. But we took a seat near the pizza counter and after finishing our gelato, we went over just to have a "quick look" at the pizza. And then a few minutes later we left with a box full of it for dinner.

At Farinella, they have probably about 6-8 different types of pizzas at a time, which come in super long, skinny pizzas from which you get to choose how much you want. Pizza rosa (aka naked pizza with only tomato sauce) and cheese pizza is $3 per 100 grams, veggie is a little more, and meat pizza just a bit more on top of that. You tell the person behind the counter how much you want, which for us was easy - we took the remaining rosa and cheese.

First off I was a little shocked at the price. After tax it was a bit over $18 for 240 g of cheese and 290 g of rosa. That translated into four small slices (about 2 x 3 inches roughly) of cheese and eight of rosa. In the end, it was not a filling meal, but considering it was $9 per person that's about on par with other non-take out pizza spots.

Not pictured: one rosa slice was eaten cold, for science.
One thing worth celebrating with this pizza is crust that has actually been salted. Looking back on the other entries of this blog you will see my biggest beef with pizza is tasteless crust, and this one did not have it. The rosa had a really thin, cracker-y crust, with great flavour from the sauce. The cheese pizza, and I assume all other pizzas aside from rosa, was almost twice as thick. It also had a lot more burnt crust, which I honestly am not really complaining about. The cheese was plentiful and was not too salty, nor was it bland. I really wished for some basil but can live without.

Though the rosa was good, I much preferred the cheese as it was a bit thicker. Not thick, mind you, but not crispy like the rosa, which just isn't really my jam. All in all I welcome authentic Italian-style pizzas to this city, which is perhaps a little overrun with varieties that are far from what you'd find in Italy.

I've rated Farinella six and a half out of eight slices.
