Say Cheese Pizza and Poutine
This weekend was gorgeous, so we celebrated with some 'za. Chains are always the easy (and cheap) choice, but I specifically wanted to try an independently-owned spot this time around. Dominoes doesn't need my money right now as much as the local shop owned by an individual or couple.
I actually wanted to try something I've never had before, but my first two choices both became unavailable for delivery while we were in the process of ordering. I'm hoping this meant they were doing great business. One day I'll try them both I'm sure. I ended up ordering two pizzas from Say Cheese Pizza and Poutine, located on Bank Street near Heron Road. The pizzas were ready within 20 minutes for pick up.
Both of our pizzas had green olives and onions; my third topping was banana peppers, and my husband's was beef bacon. Say Cheese is a Halal establishment so their bacon and pepperoni are beef rather than pork products. The pizza was still nice and hot when it was time to dig in.
This pizza is what you think of when you think "Ottawa pizza", otherwise known as Lebanese-style pizza. It's seriously thicc pizza, and each slice feels like it weighs a pound. Aside from the bacon, the toppings are hidden underneath the cheese. It's hard to tell but there are plenty of toppings underneath a good blanket of cheese. Not too much, but the perfect amount. The sauce had a nice, herby and tangy flavour to it, not sweet.
The only falter was the crust. It wasn't crisp, which is okay, but definitely needed a dip as it was dry and under-salted. We used leftover chili oil from the Asian food we ordered last weekend which was interesting. Had I thought ahead I would have gotten one of their homemade garlic dips, so I'll have to do that next time.
They don't have tons of deals for multiple pizzas - most of their deals are one pizza with wings or something like that - but you can get more than one of their large 3-topping pizza (with 3 cans of pop) deals. Each pizza comes to $22 pre-tax which is a pretty good price considering the size and heft of this pizza. These pizzas lasted the pair of us two dinners and a lunch.
All in all this is definitely a decent pizza, and a nice place to have nearby. I've heard their poutine is pretty good so it might be worth it to try one of their poutine and pizza deals. I'm pumped to get three meals out of this bad boy too!
I've rated Say Cheese five and a half out of eight slices.
