Muncheese

On the second last Friday in October, the temperatures exceeded 20 degrees. But this was to be a one-off, sandwiched by a cold Thursday and even colder Saturday, so I had to take advantage of what was sure to be the last chance to sit outdoors this year. We had some friends over for physically-distanced backyard drinks, with plans to order pizza from Dominoes when everyone left (it's quick and cheap, don't judge me). Well, it seems everyone was starved for human contact outside of their household, so we sat and chatted far longer than expected.

By the time we wrapped up it was nearing 9:00 pm and we were starved. When we pulled up the Dominoes app to order, it wouldn't let us - I'm guessing they were overwhelmed with orders. So on we moved to Uber to see what other options we had. Back in spring we had been eyeing Muncheese but when the time came to order, they had disappeared from Uber. It must have been our lucky day; there they were, open for business.

We were being dramatic about how hungry we were, so we wasted no time looking through the menu and just went for the first two pies we saw. A "Muncheesy" (read: cheese) pizza for me, and a NY style pepperoni for the gentleman.

It was 9:30 pm by the time they arrived and I threw the pizza box open, snapped a few pics, and shoved a slice down my throat before you could say "holy cheese". My first impression, since I was ravenous, was that this was the best pizza I have ever tasted in my life. This is a seriously thicc pizza, but the dough was a pleasant, soft texture. The cheese was salty and plentiful. But as I went on, I found its faults. First, there was a lot of cheese. Like, Colonnade amounts. The kind that might just stop your heart.

We're talking almost double the ratio of cheese to crust. Perhaps I'm getting old but it was a bit too much for me, and since this supposedly comes with a five cheese blend, it was insanely salty and I might have well just eaten a quarter pound of melted cheese. But the flavours of this pizza were quite nice, so with about half the amount of cheese I'd probably enjoy it considerably. I'd be more than happy to try Muncheese again, but would likely order a different pizza.

For the record, my husband didn't love his NY style. He found the crust to be excessively crunchy and there was too much pepperoni. He likes halal beef pepperoni but it doesn't lend the same greasiness that regular pepperoni does to that iconic NY slice.

As far as value goes, these prices are Uber prices so you know they've marked up to compensate for Uber's fees. That said, my medium cheese was $20.50 and my husband's large NY style was $24, so it really wasn't that bad. I got two meals and a snack out of mine!

I've rated Muncheese five and a half out of eight slices.
