Yaseen Halal Pizza

I've been bad. Or actually, I've been good. Good at life. Bad at rating pizzas. As many do in January and February I resolved to eat better, and unfortunately that meant less of my favourite food. But how can I successfully upkeep a pizza review blog if I am not eating pizza? How about commissioning others to do the heavy lifting for me?

Tonight I was busy and had plans around the dinner hour. My husband and his brother decided to order pizza, which I don't often allow them to do without me, but given my circumstances I gave them my blessing to go crazy. My only condition was that they agreed to critique the pizza and provide me with a detailed report. As I rushed out the door I reminded them to take photos and write notes so I could quiz them later.

Without further adieu I present to you a guest blog on Yaseen Halal Pizza, as dictated to me. Yaseen Halal Pizza seems to have multiple locations in the city - theirs was picked up from the Bank Street and Hunt Club location, which you might be interested to know has better reviews than their west end location.

They ordered two large pizzas with pre-determined toppings: one Mexican and one house special. The first of the two, which is on the left above, had "Mexican sauce", onions, black olives, tomatoes, and chicken subbed for the usual ground beef. The house special was topped with beef pepperoni, beef bacon (it's halal, duh), onions, green olives - and it normally has green peppers too.

This is a "normal crust pizza", neither thin nor thick but just in the middle. It needed salt, which is sadly a common theme, I find. Toppings were mostly on top of the cheese but the beef pepperoni on the house special was hidden underneath. That seems to have made sense since it was massive, and doesn't crisp the way that regular pepperoni does. They didn't go too crazy on the cheese, but instead had just the right amount to nicely blanket all the toppings and leave no spots untouched. The flavour of the cheese was standard with nothing notable. As for the sauce, a solid tangy tomato sauce was appreciated as opposed to the sugar-laden sweet stuff so many chains use. I asked what the mysterious "Mexican sauce" on the Mexican pizza was, and I was told "no clue". They couldn't really distinguish a taste amongst all the other flavours.

The highlight of these pizzas may have been the meat - beef bacon crumble on the house special and that pinkish chicken on the Mexican. Toppings were well dispersed and plentiful, and it even came with a delicate sprinkling of herbs.

As I struggled to coax this review from my husband, I finally straight out asked "did you like this pizza?". Instead of real words he responded as he so often does: "meh".

"Okay, well then what didn't you like about it," I asked.

"There was nothing outstanding about it, but nothing terrible either. It was serviceable pizza."

There you have it folks. Serviceable pizza. At roughly $40 for two larges after tax, that's not bad considering how generous they were with the toppings. It also came with a dip that was perhaps intended for the Mexican pizza since it was guessed to be some sort of chipotle ranch.

I asked if he'd get this pizza again and he shrugged. A man of few words.

We've rated Yaseen five out of eight slices.

Leave a comment with your opinion, or your thoughts on Yaseen, and let me know where I should hit up next!
