Crust & Crate

This past Saturday was gorgeous, and while out returning a shirt at one of the shops at Lansdowne, we decided to ditch our lunch plans and sit down at one of the patios instead. Even though there were tons of people walking, biking, and sitting on the benches, most of the patios were fairly empty. We settled on Crust & Crate, a pizza spot I've heard is owned by Gabriel's (I didn't verify this so take it with a grain of salt).

I've actually been to Crust & Crate before for a birthday party. I had already eaten that night so I didn't order a pizza, but did end up having a slice which I found pleasantly surprising. I was excited to give it a real try, even though Gabriel's is trash pizza.

I strayed from my normal reserved choices (I love me a good margherita) and went out on a limb by ordering the Pomme de Terre pizza. It came with a cream sauce, mozzarella, goat's cheese, potatoes, herbs, roasted garlic, and hold the mushrooms please-and-thanks. My husband ordered Bacon in the Sun, which was full of pineapple salsa, bacon, and jalapenos. The 'zas came out and my first impression was that they were dressed to the nines. No shortage of toppings here, and I mean that in a good way.

Digging into my piping hot pizza, I found it was as delicious as it looked. Very rich, of course, with a healthy blanket of cheese. Not Colonnade levels but I won't say that like it's a bad thing. I swear there was half a head of roasted garlic on my pizza, with each slice having at least two bulbs. They were so beautifully roasted I spread them out with a knife across the whole slice, so I could get garlic with each bite.

The crust was what surprised me the most. It was a bit inconsistent in its puffiness, but it made for a nice variety. One or two slices had almost crackery-thin crust, while the remainder had a nice soft crust, albeit a little under-flavoured. The texture was great though! I am not a fan of overcooked, rock hard crust, and this was not that at all.

I'm not really sure if there was actually any goat's cheese on the pizza. I definitely didn't get that familiar tangy smack I was hoping for, but that was the only downside. I still think I made the right choice and I enjoyed every last slice of that tasty pie.

Both our pizzas were $17 and were plenty for us. I probably wouldn't normally eat the whole thing as it was very rich and hearty, but I was quite hungry after a long bike, and an even longer wait (the service left much to be desired). Throw in a salad and two people could happily split one of these pizzas. They're kind of elongated rather than a perfect circle, and come with 6 good-sized slices.

All in all I had low expectations and Crust & Crate exceeded them.

I've rated Crust & Crate six out of eight slices.
