O Town Pizza

It’s me! I have not disappeared. Truthfully I haven’t been eating much pizza in 2021. During the third wave and beyond I was eating out plenty but more higher end food especially when takeout made it so much more accessible. I also felt very guilty reviewing any pizza that was not great; I didn’t want to be someone shitting on a business while they all struggled to stay alive. So I kept mum until I had a pizza worth celebrating. And boy did I find one.

A new spot in my neighbourhood with Indian-inspired pizzas popped up earlier this summer called O Town Pizza. I then started seeing more election-style signs on lawns proudly bearing the O Town Pizza name than I did any of the candidates in the current election. Which is great, because it reminded me to give the place a try.

I called and ordered a large shahi paneer pizza for pick up. When I see paneer on a menu, I simply can’t resist. It comes with a curry sauce, green peppers, red onions, paneer, ginger, garlic, and if you ask, they’ll skip the cilantro. Opening it up, it was clear that they do not skimp on toppings. I couldn’t wait to dig in.

I’m going to cut right to the chase - this pizza was awesome. The underbelly crust had a nice crisp to it without being overdone in the slightest, while the outer crust was a nice soft texture. This pizza punches you in the face with flavour. It’s not for the faint of heart. First, there are unadvertised green chilies tucked in here amongst the green peppers. For me, spice is always welcome, and this one was surprisingly hot. Between the chilies, garlic, and ginger, each bite is an adventure.

The slices are seriously hefty, but it’s not what I’d call Lebanese style. It’s a good, neutral medium-thickness pizza with generously applied toppings. I love that the peppers and onions seem to have been pre-cooked so they were nice and soft. If I’m searching for downsides to this pizza, it would be the topping distribution. At times you’d get a mouthful of ginger, or a big chunk of hot pepper. It didn’t bother me much, but it meant that I started off with a very gingery slice and my husband didn’t taste any until his second slice. By the way - re: ginger on pizza - I think this was a first for me, but I enjoyed it.

I highly recommend ordering this pizza but do exercise patience as it seems it’s just the one guy running the place, even on a fairly busy Friday night. It did take about 40 minutes but was worth the wait. At about $30 for a large, it’s a bit on the expensive side, but I wouldn’t hesitate to drop $30 on this pizza again.

I’ve rated O Town Pizza six and a half out of eight slices.
